How we pick

Safety first

• Size: too big to swallow or fit whole in the mouth, and offered in sizes that match the dogs and cats it's sold for.
• Choking and swallowing: no small parts, squeakers or stuffing that a determined pet can pull out, unless the pick is clearly marked for supervised play.
• Materials: nothing so hard it risks broken teeth (a chew should dent under a thumbnail), and no materials the maker won't name.
• Every safety note on the site cites a veterinary or ASPCA source.

Durability

• It should hold up to the kind of play it's picked for. We say who it suits (gentle players, fetchers, power chewers) rather than calling anything indestructible.
• We tell you how to spot wear and when to replace it.

Enrichment value

• Good toys give pets a job: chasing, foraging, puzzling, chewing, or playing with you.
• We favor toys that meet a real need over novelty.

Honest drawbacks

• Every pick lists at least one drawback: who it isn't for, what wears out first, or what it costs compared with alternatives.
• If we stop recommending something, it moves to its guide's past picks with a note saying why.
